Richmond has fallen, General Robert E. Lee has surrendered; the Civil War was ending. And then, Abraham Lincoln was plucked from this earth as if his mission here had been accomplished - to keep the United States united...to preserve the Union! There are so many instances in U.S. History where the hand of fate seems to be operating and I think this is one! Join me as we approach the 157th anniversary of the Assassination to look back at this tragic event in our history.
This presentation is the result of many years of research and travel. My journey has taken me to Washington D.C. to photograph and document the site of the assassination and Lincoln's death - Ford’s Theater and the Peterson House. Also, I've visited Mary Surratt’s Boarding House and her Tavern where the conspirators met. Then, walking in the footsteps of the assassin I was able to photograph the sites of his escape - the Samuel Mudd House, The Pine Thicket; the site where Booth and and co-conspirator David Herold hid out in the days after the assassination, and finally the site of the Garrett House and Barn where Federal Troops cornered and killed Booth.
About an hour in length, the talk begins with a short synopsis of the backdrop of the Civil War leading into an examination of the plot to kidnap Lincoln and how that plot developed into a scheme to assassinate the president. Both Lincoln and Booth's movements during the day of the assassination are meticulously chronicled using a simultaneous time-line. And then, by utilizing photographs of the period, modern photographs and video, the assassination is recounted in stunning detail. The escape and capture of John Wilkes Booth is fully described with photographs and video footage of the locations where he hid and the site where he was killed. The lecture concludes with a vivid description of the trial of the all of the conspirators and execution of the four of them; Mary Surratt, Lewis Powell, David Herold and George Atzerodt.
